Voie Verte Roller - Vauvert/Gallician/Tour Carbonnière (30)

This rollerblading greenway extends between Vauvert and Aigues-Mortes, more precisely the carbonnière tower in Saint Laurent D'Aigouze.

Overall it is very smooth, tarmaced all the way, but to present it to you properly I will cut it into two pieces... you will quickly understand that one of the two pieces is of greater interest than the other. ..

The first part, Vauvert-Gallician:

Departing from Vauvert, you can park easily near the college. You will quickly follow the Philippe Lamour Canal, sometimes passing to the left or right of it. This canal is an irrigation canal in Bas-Rhône Languedoc.

There are a few road crossings or peasant access paths, but excellent visibility, so you can anticipate and pass quietly without having to stop if there is no one there. Be careful though, you do not have priority when crossing roads/paths.

We therefore follow the Canal, an old railway line and the orchards and vineyards for approximately 8km on a very flat and tarmac route.

This first piece of greenway is the oldest in the Gard, you can feel it at ground level with numerous bumps and root cracks... even if it has been taken over in places, the ground is quite "bumpy" on certain passages , it can even be dangerous (especially at night) if you're not careful...

At the beginning of 2024 work was undertaken for the renovation, to date, I have not been to see what it looks like.

After 8km, we arrive at the entrance to the village of Gallician on the D779, here you can reach the center of the village by a smooth cycle path, but the last few meters are on a sidewalk or shared road.

Second part, Gallician La tour Carbonnière:

CLEARLY MY FAVORITE OF GARDOIS ROLLER HIKING!

Departing from the port of Gallician (free parking), this greenway which is part of the VIA RHÔNA, is perfectly flat and superbly paved, it stretches for 9km.

The departure is therefore with the boats moored at the port, on the Canal du Rhône à Sète. We follow the canal for the entire duration of the hike, with the water and the boats on one side, and the Camargue, its typical landscape and its wild animals on the other.

About halfway you will see the Pont des Tourradons, either you go from under it and continue, or you climb on it for a 360° view in the middle of the Camargue, in the distance you should see the Carbonnière tower (current end of this route roller green) and even the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes a little further to the left.

Let's continue until the end, don't hesitate to observe the sky and look through the reeds, you are in the middle of the Camargue, the fauna and flora are rich, you will inevitably come across cool things and why not, do a pose, to admire or photograph the pink flamingos!

The Carbonnière tower is getting bigger, you are at the end of the greenway. I strongly recommend that you walk the few dozen meters remaining on the road to reach the Tower.

This tower is a watchtower built at the end of the 13th century to protect the fortified town of Aigues-Mortes. In an incredible state of conservation it is open to the public, you can take the spiral staircase located in one of the pillars and climb to the top. Treat yourself to a 360° panorama of the Camargue! It's breathtaking. Explanatory panels are available to guide you and give you information about the region.

You have loved ? onward for the return!

Gallician-La tour Carbonnière : 18km Go/Back

Vauvert-Gallician : 16km Go/Back

TOTAL : Vauvert-La Tour Carbonnière 34km Go/Back

Why the crush?

Why did I fall in love with it? Trust me, go there at sunset!

Without hesitation, go ahead, just the Gallician piece, the Carbonnière tower and above all, I'll see it: at sunset! Take your time, stroll around and pose to observe nature and animals, roll your eyes in the air, left and right, appreciate this beautiful Camargue!

Start the hike when the sun goes down in the late afternoon, try to arrive at the Carbonnière tower at sunset and enjoy it!

The more you advance, the more the colors become, yellow, red, pink and purple... as you go along the water you get closer to the tower and you already take in the sight. Between the group flights of birds, the peaceful pink flamingos with their feet in the water, the reeds dancing in the slight breeze or the coypu jumping into the water as you approach... it's a break in the time in a magical place!

My ultimate pleasure is to arrive in time for the sunset... I savor this 360° view with incredible colors and soothing silence, a suspended moment with nature as far as the eye can see.

The return takes place, in this case, with the last light of day. Bring headlamps to light your path and avoid small traps (a small stone or branch can surprise you)...

The most and less :

The Most :

  • The perfect setting and ground (on the portion starting from Gallician towards the Tower)
  • The variety of crossed animals
  • The ease of hiking, with its perfectly flat route.
  • The view from the bridge halfway and from the top of the tower.

The less :

  • The part between Vauvert and Gallician which is aging (being repaired in early 2024)
  • The passage on the road between the end of the Vauvert greenway and the Via Rhôna which leaves the port of Gallician. The road is not great and we have some passages really on the road...
